Experts have failed to locate the rich copper mine in which Polly's late father believed to be on the property, somewhere, now jointly-owned by Polly and Mr. King. The bank is pressing Mr. King for payment on a loan, and he must sell his beautiful home. Polly and Mrs. Pepper insist that Mr. King and Jasper return with them to the modest Pepper cottage. Martin, the King's loyal butler, refuses to be discharged and joins the family. Mrs. Pepper obtains her old job at the factory and Polly, the eldest Pepper child, becomes mistress of the Pepper household. MArtin tells Polly that he once studied geology, sees the late Mr. Pepper's mineral samples and maps and is equally convinced that a rich copper mine exists on the deserted property
